IPTC 2025.1

The 2025.1 revision of the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard that introduces dedicated fields for AI-generated content. New fields include AISystemUsed, AISystemVersionUsed, and DigitalSourceType, providing a standardized vocabulary for recording how AI tools contributed to content creation.

The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) has maintained photo metadata standards since 1979. The 2025.1 revision is significant because it formalizes AI-specific fields that integrate with existing XMP and EXIF metadata infrastructure already supported by major software platforms.

For creative agencies, IPTC 2025.1 matters because it provides a vendor-neutral way to record AI involvement that survives across tools and platforms. Unlike proprietary metadata formats, IPTC fields are recognized by Adobe Creative Suite, DAM systems, and stock photography platforms. The DigitalSourceType field distinguishes between human-created, AI-generated, and AI-assisted content—a distinction increasingly required by regulators and clients.
