trainedAlgorithmicMedia

An IPTC Digital Source Type standard value indicating that content was generated by an AI model trained on data. Midjourney embeds this value in downloaded images' IPTC metadata, providing a machine-readable disclosure signal. Unlike C2PA, this tag is unsigned and can be trivially removed, creating a compliance gap for regulations requiring tamper-resistant disclosure.

The trainedAlgorithmicMedia value is part of IPTC's Digital Source Type vocabulary, designed to standardize how AI-generated content is labeled in image metadata. When Midjourney embeds this value, it signals to any metadata-aware system that the image was produced by a trained model rather than captured by a camera or created manually.

The critical limitation is that IPTC metadata is unsigned — anyone with basic tools can strip or modify it. This matters for EU AI Act Article 50 compliance, which requires AI-generated content to be labeled in a way that is "machine-readable" and resistant to removal. While IPTC trainedAlgorithmicMedia satisfies the machine-readable requirement, it fails the tamper-resistance test. Organizations relying solely on this signal for compliance should understand that downstream recipients can remove the disclosure with no detectable trace.
